Thread: For a Buddy...

The other day, while practicing my Russian handwriting, a friend of mine asked me to spell his name in Russian. I had only studied Russian for a short while and didn't have the spelling rules down pat, so I told him I didn't know. Could anyone out there tell me how to correctly spell JUSTIN in Russian or give me a Russian equivalent?? I would deeply appreciate it. :D

Джастин or Юстин

Джастин если имя англоязычное
Юстин если немецкое

I'd Think that Джеймз would sound better, with a з on the end rather than a c.

When З comes at then end of a word it is pronounced С. Therefore Джеймс and Джеймз sound the same.

SashaT, English names are spelt phontecially in Russian. Some problem's:

English J sound = Дж (French J = Ж , Spanish J = Х )
e.g. John = Джон

English W = У
e.g. William = Уилиам or Уиллиам

English H = Х
e.g. Harry = Хэри

The U in Justin = а
The a in Harry = Э or A
The e in Edward = Э
The i in Tim = и
The i in Liam = и

Bescially you try and make it sound as much like the English using the sounds that the Russian letters can make.

Generally, when there is an E in the begining of the name, Э is used (Эдуард) but in the middle of a word russian E is usually used: Gregory = (Грегори)

Yes I know about the transliteration of H to Г. e.g. Гитлер
But for people's names now they usually do Х.

Just do a google search on the two spelling variants and you will see that Джеимс is much more common.

Зато, если мы будем склонять, то, к примеру, это будет "Джеймза", "Джеймзу" и т.п., "раза", "разу" и т.п. "З" будет везде, а не "с". Естественно, "вменяемый" будет произносить "с", но в остальных случаях ему придётся озванчивать. Я изучаю немного эту проблему.

С какой радости тут "з" появилась?

Почтенный гражданин Darabat предложил "з" на предыдущей странице для того, чтобы наиболее близко отобразить английское звучание, в чём я его и поддерживаю. Естественно, что в именительном падеже фонетически "ни один нормальный натив", как выразился нижеподписавшийся, не будет произносить звонкий звук. Но зато в косвенных падежах он будет звучать.

ДжеймЗa?
"Ни один вменяемый..." и в этом случае не скажет "З".

Уверен? Скажи хотя бы "два раза" со звуком [с].
