    birthday greeting translation

I don't speak any Russian. My girlfriend's mom speaks a little english and her birthday is on July 8th. I wanted to write a letter of appreciation in Russian so I thought somebody could translate it for me.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dear Elena,

I’m sorry I can’t be there to wish you a happy birthday in person so I write you a letter to say happy birthday. May your birthday be all that you hoped it would be. I’m sure your friends and family are making your birthday a pleasant one.

I also want to thank you for treating me so well for the past few months. When my mom moved away, you were there to treat me like part of your family when I needed it most. You may not have known how much this meant to me but it truly meant a lot. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

May your birthday be filled with many smiles.

    Best wishes,

    I'll edit a little, OK?

**** You need to find out her father's name, if you can, otherwise it does not sound polite.
Another thing, I do not know how close you are, so to use very non-formal way talking to he "ты" probably better to replace with more polite "Вы"

    OK. It's strange, but I didn't think of you-differences.

Bender_over, the difference between my translation and that of Pioner's is in the use of more polite form of address. Make your choice accordingly.

And if he already called her Elena when they comunicated before, then I think patronimic is not necessary.

I call her Elena but whatever is more polite and traditional in Russia would probably be best. They don't really expect me to follow Russian customs but it's just a bonus if I do.

And to the second poster who said I get her father's name, do you mean her last name or her father's first name.

You were all so helpful and I appreciate it so much. Thank you all very much.

Her father's first name. That is a polite/formal form to speak somebody. For example, let's say her father's name was Ivan, then you should talk to her as Elena Ivanovna. That ending -ovna is needed to be added to father's first name. If you can't retrive it, that is Ok, keep it Dear Elena, BTW, I skipped it, I think "Дорогая Елена" would be better, I correct my post which is the second vers. of translation.

If you can retrive Elena's father's name, let us know, we will give you final version, if you can't that will not be a big problem, just delete the stars (***.

I asked my girlfriend for her grandfather's name but she said that it would be fine as is. Thanks again, you've been very helpful.
