Thread: ally

How I can translate the word ally in Russian.
For example:
1. The allies (i.e. the countries) have decided to strike. Also how is called World War II: Allies and Axis.
2. When she has problems with her husband, he always support her. He has been a real ally in helping her face all her family problems. (Here the word ally is used more figuratively)
3. In the conference everyone was against him but he found an ally in the face of the Vice President (In English it sounds awkward but in Greek it has meaning so there is a possibility to work also in Russian).
4. Before a foreign business entering a foreign country it should find local allies (i.e. I don't mean just other business)

4. I am afraid, I do not understand the sentence. May be, "Иностранный бизнес должен найти потенциальных партнёров в той стране, где он хочет вести дела"

1. Страны-союзники приняли решение нанести удар. WWII Allies – Страны-союзники or Антигитлеровская коалиция, Axis = Страны Оси.
2. Когда у неё возникают проблемы с мужем, он всегда поддерживает её. Он всегда был для неё союзником при решении всех семейных проблем.
3. На конференции все высказывались против него, однако он нашёл союзника в лице вице-президента. (works fine in Russian, but in think in English ‘ally’ works as well)
4. Перед тем как выйти на рынок в иностранном государстве, фирма должна найти союзников в лице местных властей (authorities, if it works here?)

So ally is союзник. And it works metaphorically too (as a political or military style metaphor).

The work партнёров works for me.
But I was looking for something more general: For example if a business wants to enter Chinese market it should found some public or municipality servants to cooperate with (i.e. bribe).

Then "союзник" is a good choice.

Еще "лоббисты" (= lobbyists) сюда же относятся.

There is no direct translation for "Ally" and "Alliance". Often we use the words "союз" and "союзник". But you should use it right, because it is more "union", a stronger word.

For alliances we also use "военный союз/альянс" and for allies "союзники по альянсу".

For Allies and Axis there are fixed notion "Страны Союзники" and "Страны Оси".

Must be Эти транзакции создают союзников, а не врагов. (the English sentence is in present)
