Beware! If the new competitors will be using the monopoly's cables and infrastructure then not a whole lot will change.

There are plenty of service providers but a company called Telstra here, has a monopoly on the cables that feed the phones, TV, and Internet.

After reading all this I can tell you that Australia has about the same fvcked up system that Russia has. As a matter of fact i'm certain that the stupid Aussies decided to pattern their Internet system after the Russians instead of the Americans.

As far as I know your mentality, if you hacked and uncapped your cable modem or broke in your ISP's headend you'd get sued and maybe even put in jail and your contract would be torn apart and the isp would never sign another one with you. ISPs in Russia are much more tolerable to such things. I know many people around me who hacked their ISPs and got off lightly. One little plus to a huge heap of disadvantages.

In Siberia we have the same problem as you in Australia and NZ: we are damn far from anywhere and have only 2 "thick" wires on the ground and a satellite dish as an alternative.

btw satelite are damn cheap...but latency is very big, too About 500...1000 ms, so you can`t play quake3 or even warcraft3
