    Zaclav, Russia

    Hello,
I am trying to trace my family roots and need some help. In 1936 in the U.S.A. my Grandfather filled out a form. On it he listed his place of birth as Zaclav, Russia. In Russian is it Заклав? If not, what is it? Doing a search for заклав gives a boat load of sites but most of them are in Ukrainian (I think). I was told that many years ago it was common in the USA to refer to Ukraine/Belarus as Russia. Is that true? If so, is it possible that Zaclav could be in Ukraine? I was always told that he was born in Kiev. I asked his son who told me that. Anyone heard of Zaclav?

    What does it mean below?

Они клялись в этом, заклав быка, кабана и барана, (6) над щитом, причем эллины окунали (в кровь) меч, а варвары – наконечник копья.

    Thank you,

    Scott

By Russia, they probably mean USSR since it included many other republics. The name is not Russian so you'd better turn to other contry than Russia, I think.

The word in your Russin sentence is the verbal in the past tense meaning "to have a sacrifice of".

Maybe the name of the city was not "Заклав" but "Заслав"? Заслав is in the Ukraine. It's name now is "Изяслав (Ізяслав, Izyaslav)"
Could you please occasionally correct my stupid errors!

Yes, заклав = заколов (from заколоть).
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

Wow - I'm going there right now!!! Who's the woman in the top photo?

Guin, I do agree with you. The city is near the city he listed as the last place in lived (Sepetovka) before coming to the U.S.A.
