When you're in Russia, don't forget about the informal word for 'общежитие' - общага.Originally Posted by Mordan

thx you both! я сейчас ищу общагу!
That's right. Just be sure to use the word 'общага' only in informal situations. Don't use this word when calling a Russian tourist agency for example to enquire about vacant rooms in certain hostels.

"Youth hostels, aka obshaga, in Volgograd don’t advertise their vacancies on the Internet. Most of them belong to different educational institutions but to spend a couple of nights there you should know “right people”.
Unfortunately I don’t know anyone who can help. You can try contacting British Council Center, Volgograd branch http://www.britishcouncil.org/russia-volgograd.htm
The center is based in Teacher Training University, which has a couple of relatively good hostels. You can send them an email - it never hurts to ask. I am sure they have a lot of experience with students’ accomodations.
My personal advice is to book a hotel because it’s safe especially for a short period of time. Keep in mind that Volgograd is stretched along for 84 km so if you live far away, you will spend a lot of time commuting. The best hotels will be “Intourist” or “Volgograd”. They both are both downtown and very close to the railway station and other places of interest. The standard room rate is about $70 http://www.visitrussia.com/citiesguide/ ... hotels.htm
One more idea is to reserve an apartment, it can be cheaper than a hotel.
How long are you planning to stay in the city?
There are quite a few online reservations websites. Here is one of them: http://www.visitrussia.com/tickets/train-tickets.htm# "

A few days only. I'm visiting the big cities in the South of Russia.Originally Posted by Lampada

Турист is right opposite The Mamaev Hill Memorial Complex and it will take you 15 - 20 min to get to downtown by public tranportation. Южная is somewhere in downtown. They are both OK. Did you try British Council?
