    What's your learning style?

Without a doubt a good way to learn a new language to is figure out your particular style of learning in general. That way you can build on your strengths to help possibly compensate for your weaknesses.

Here's a good quiz to find out your possible learning preference.

And here you can learn more about your particular learning style and possible strategies.

According to the test Im primarily a visual learner.

    Traits of the VISUAL Learner

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
=> Prefers to see words written down
=> When something is being described, the visual learner also prefers to have a picture to view.

=> Prefers a time-line or some other similar diagram to remember historical events.

=> Prefers written instructions rather than verbal instructions.

=> Observes all the physical elements in a classroom.

=> Carefully organizes their learning materials.

=> Enjoys decorating their learning areas.

=> Prefers photographs and illustrations with printed content.

=> Remembers and understands through the use of diagrams, charts and maps.

=> Appreciates presentations using OHP transparencies or handouts.

=> Studies materials by reading notes and organizing it in outline form

    => Enjoys visual art activities

This certainly helps explains why I usually do better when reading in Russian than trying to comprehend spoken Russian. Trying to listen to a Russian conversation is very difficult for me.

I am also a visual learner. When i study vocab i write out and speak the words over and over until i remember it. then i write it out more!

I too can understand written Russian better than understand spoken Russian. its embarassing how many times i have to ask my teacher to repeat

me too Seems a bit weird though, that there are only three different groups you can end up in. I find it a bit unlikely that those three groups would represent all the people taking the test.

Exactly my feeling. I find the test a bit shallow. Also, I think it would be better if they told you at the end that you're x% of this, y% of that, etc.

Gee, I just found a simple test people could take to find out. Alright, here's a test that gives you the percentage of what you are.

These tests are hardly earth-shatteringly incisive though, are they?

    Question 1)
Do you prefer to learn something by a) seeing it, b) hearing it, or c) doing it.

umm... I think probably b) hearing it.

According to your responses, we deduce that you are primarily an Auditory Learner.

Aren't we clever? Bet you couldn't have figured that out for yourself without taking our test.

    Wow. Fascinating.

I always hated all this Visual Auditory Kinesthetic BS tests they made us take in school(in fact, they're still making us take it). They always had such stupid questions like "Do you like filing papers?(You're a kinesthetic learner!)" etc. I think in truth most people are a good mix of all of them, with some skills being best learned one way or another. I don't know anybody who learned to swim just by watching people. The results of most of those tests, as far as I remember, was that almost everybody was a visual learner and there were one or two kids who were supposed to be something else. But IMO this is probably because most of the questions which would give a "Visual" result were questions that people would often answer "Yes" to, i.e. "Do you like watching movies", "Do you like watching television", etc.

I think what the tests fail to do is establish an average and median for the ways people learn, and track how much a person deviates from this. Instead they just reaffirm that yes, humans do rely on sight as their primary sense.

Just great! Three types of learners. What about those of us who the test calls an "unknown learner." These types of tests may have some value, but they could be much better I think.

I thought I'd just throw in a cheap concurrance without having to think up something useful to say. You see, I'm a Passive Learner .

I'm a psychic learner. I subconsciously extract data from the minds of people who know what I am trying to learn.

Unfortunately I have been diagnosed as a "computer learner" .The information must be "punched" into me.
