Thread: How bad is the word ***?

Today I was talking to some native Russian speaking girls that I tutor and they asked me if I knew any swear words. And of course the first one that popped into my head from my Dictionary of Russian Obscenities was "Соси мой ***." And when I said this they were really surprised and told me to never say that. I couldn't tell if they were surprised because I knew it or because it was that bad. Keep in mind that these girls are in highschool so I wasn't talking to like a 5 year old.

So how bad is it?

It's bad enough to scare highschool girls. Well, think for yourself. Even if you translate it into English, is that something that you would normally say?

Being a highschool boy, it is something I would say. Although, it must be pretty bad because they were freely using the word "сука." So it wasn't like they were afraid of swear words.

It's not the word you should use with strangers (unless they're pissing you off).
Sometimes, some constructions with this word can be used informally but such cases are rare and still such phrases are not to be used in a decent company (там ни.уя нет - there's nothing there).

It's very rude, much worse than "сука".

There are newances. In some cases сука can be more offensive. In the example I mentioned in the previous message or in the phrase like "ни х.я не видно" this word does not bear any insulting notes. It's just a bit rude.

It rhymes with "Fooey" .....so it must be OK to say to your girlfriend's mother!!!

There is "hooey" word, a synonym to "fooey", if I can trust my dicKtionary. :^)

I believe "хуй" is more offensive than "сука" since "сука" CAN be used in decent company after all ("сука" = female dog, I've heard that in English "bitch" has the same meaning).

But you're right, there are nuances. The main nuance is when "хуй" is used in impersonal expresions ("ни х*я не видно", "х*ёво", etc.) or when speaker uses it with regard to himself ("я ох*ел"), it's not offensive (though it's still very vulgar).

But when "хуй" used with regard to another person, especially in imperative, it's not only very vulgar, but also very offensive. I'd say the phrase Автобус used to impress the girls with his knowledge of Russian was probably the worst thing he could come up with. If he says that phrase to the person he knows very little the result may be disastrous.

If personally would never talk to the person who said such thing to me in "real" conversation (and I'm not a prude, I do use "мат" sometimes... Just don't tell my Mom).

Вдова не осталась в долгу - воспользовавшись законом, разрешающим подобные союзы, она вышла замуж за пса-миллионера, таким образом унаследовав состояние покойного супруга.

Когда рассказчик закончил, под дружный смех всех присутствующих герои программы и сам ведущий - бывший министр культуры, Михаил Ефимович Швыдкой, вместе воскикнули: "Вот сука!"

Perhaps they were surprized, because they knew it. I do not know. But it is not the best phrase to surprize anyone, especially the Russian girls.
The phrase itself isn't that surprizing at all.

It's one of the most offensive thing to hear in Russian. If you'd like to be smashed all over the ground while talking to any fist-happy male, keep trying with this phrase... So it's up to you to decied how BAD it is.

Strongly recommended to leave some vocab aside.

I don't think that I fully understood how bad it was until I read that last part. I feel like a little kid saying it and their mom/dad caught them.

I think suck my D* would still be more rude. If you add the MF it doesnt make it more rude, it just sounds more comical.
