    watering Christmas tree?

Just reading various funny facts and came across that:

31 Brits have died since 1996 by watering their Christmas tree while
the fairy lights were plugged in.

I don't get it. What's the point in watering Christmas tree? Were these brits crazy or it's a common practice? (We are talking about decorated felled trees, right?)

P.S. In 2000 eight Brits cracked their skull whilst throwing up into the
    toilet...
    Cool!

if you don't water 'em they dry out and the pine needles fall off.
Actually you just add water to the base that the tree sits in.
I'm somewhat suspicious of that story's veracity.

I know, it sounds silly to water a Christmas tree... but water does give a few more days of "life" to the dying tree.

For the same reason you will put cut flowers in a vase with water... a few more days of "life".

The trees, and flowers, will continue to absorb water, after cutting. But only for a few days.

I use to grow roses, many years ago, and take rose stem cuttings, replant, and grow new, fresh roses with the cuttings. Many of the botanical principles are the same.

The science of "hydroponics" gardening also uses similar principles for growing plants, vegetables.

    The story is probably accurate...

Water + Electricity + Careless Human = often a Dead Human.

Silly me. I was confused because we (or at least my family) never water them. Probably because we they are not real trees for us, you know, but Christmas trees.

I understand you very well, but it's difficult to water a tree when it's fixed in the special tripod without any soil (which is a rather common way to fix Christamas trees). All the water would be on the flour.
Or may be you spray it with water?
(Yeah, I'm full of stupid questions ).

I am not sure of Britain, but in America you can buy tripods that are also bowls, to contain water for the tree. An "evergreen" (pine, spruce, etc.) tree will stay "fresh" for several more days, and will not lose so many needles.

Soil is not necessary...but the water is absorbed naturally by the tree, and will maintain life for several days.

Again, basic forestry/botany. My brother is a forester, so this is how I know.

My X-mas pine-tree stayed from 26 of December till 4 of March this year.

I just put it into a basin (16 liters size) with 12 liters of water and never add more later.

See the photo of my son. It was made approximately on 28 of February.

Thanks, y'all, for the corrections. Didn't realize how many errors I could make in such a short post!! That's what I get for overediting, I guess. Lampada, I didn't mean "sing," I meant "water."

Yes, we can buy tripods or other kind of stands made especially for Christmas trees. They have a little bowl that holds the water, and you have to refill it every couple of days because the tree takes the water up. Keeps the needles from drying out so fast.

Это он сам так вырядился. Нашел на дне комода своё старьё, особенно рубашку. Любимая у него была. А штаны и получше есть
Но мы тут про ёлки пишем.
