    Sounds of Animals

What are the animal sounds (Голоса животных) for turkey, magpie, grasshopper and pigeon in Russian? It looks like they are not normally imitated by kids and parents.

Check out the new lesson about animals sounds. Please, let me know if you have any suggestions and improvements.

You've done a great job on your animal sounds page! I sent you one comment with regards to one of the verbs describing the sound a hen makes. With regards to the last four sounds, you are right, these are normally not attempted by regular people.

Thank you Mike. I've made the correction for the alternative hen's sound, or as Russians would say hen's "voice"

    Master Administrator, this is CLASSIC!!!
A very quiet night at work was made noisy! I had a blast with 'my Russian kids' making animal noises. A guest came in the lobby with a child that performed the "Animal Song"
They both know men who keep pigeons and "talk" to them. Kyyyy Kyyyy, same as a dove. They can both do this and other bird calls. So could I.
A guest came in the lobby with a child that performed the "Animal Song" for us and 'my kids' taught her привет and пока. I pity her mother.

I'm going to surprise them later with some hunting calls I brought in.

I fear when they write home they describe me as fairly insane, but we have a lot of fun.

    Re: Sounds of Animals

    I'm glad you had fun.

ку-ку is a cuckoo's "voice". I'm not sure how to imitate the dove's sound. There doesn't seem to be anything in Russian for that. But if you say куууу-куууу at a different pitch and more stretched than a cuckoo that could pass for a dove

If kids are really small these questions can help to educate them. I will add them to the lesson later.

Which one of the animals croaks?

    Who barks?

    Who lows?

    What's this animal called?

    What does it do?

    A sparrow. It chirps.

    "Ква-Ква". Что лягушка делает? Квакает.
Kva-kva. What does the frog do? Croaks.

    Re: Sounds of Animals

"My Russian kids" are 19 & 20 years old, here on J-1 visas.

I learn some rather bizarre Russian every summer at the motel. It comes in handy around guests and we use code in case someone speaks Russian. We use 2 way radios and can never be sure who can hear the other one.

I brought in the hunting calls last night. A front desk clerk brought in a "See & Say" (child's toy, turn pointer to an animal, pull string and hear "the cows says MOOO").

At 9pm, I walk around the property to check on things, etc. I was talking to some guests and my radio calls "земля (me) где вы? Хорошо или плох?"
    I reply "Да. стояанка. хорошо."
Guests are fairly impressed when I explain things.
Radio calls "земля" "Да" "The cow says MOOO (laughter) корова говорит муууу! (more laughter)" The guests laughed and I went back to "work".

We're working on the sounds a sea gull, seal and dolphin make. We decided against whales. I played the CD someone left last year for the "kids". They said it was quite strange but both wanted copies.
I'm easily amused late at night...
