Having a fondness for making lists, I am going start one for words in Russian that are derived from non-European languages. If anyone knows any and wishes to add to the list they are welcome to do so. I will start with a few that come to mind.

1. карандаш -pencil
2. чемодан -suitcase
3. таракан -cockroach
4. в - in
5. баба - woman
6. юбка - skirt
7. сорок - forty

It would be of great interest if you provide each word with the note about the language which it comes from.
