    Russian TV channel, series, etc?

    Hi,

I studied Russian at school for a few years a decade ago and forgot most of it to be honest.
I'm willing to correct that and get back into it.

However, I would like to make this journey as entertaining as possible. That means I would rather keep grammar exercises to a minimum. I still have all my old books and I intend to use them a little but I also kind of know myself and I'm pretty sure that I will give up after 2 weeks if I choose an approach too academic.

When I studied English (I'm French), what made it easier was the sheer volume of free newspapers, movies, tv series, etc available online.
It's more entertaining to learn English by watching "Breaking Bad" or "Little Britain" than by memorising a list of irregular verbs…

    So, my question is this:
What Russian TV series, online live TV channels, Russian newspapers would you recommend?

Anything really as long as it is fun and efficient. It could even be iPhone apps.

    Anyway, any recommendations appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

PS: so far, I just bookmarked this (http://ria.ru/) but the live feed is quite hard for me at this stage!

You plan watching them with subtitles? Or what is your strategy?

hm. I'm watching "Метод Лавровой" TV series. Not sure you can find Russian subtitles for Russian movies.

    Thanks!

Back in the days, when watching an American TV series:
    - at first, I would watch in English with French subtitles
    - then with English subtitles
And when feeling confident enough, I would keep watching the series with no subtitle at all.

But then, my question is more general: how to make learning Russian as fun and as non-academic as possible? There are many options those days that student just didn't have two decades ago.

    Официальный сайт ФГУП "Киноконцерн "Мосфильм"

This site has a collection of loads of Soviet (and possibly Russian too?) movies and you can use English subtitles or turn them off. The best part of it is that it's totally free

And since it's been so long since you've studied Russian, I would recommend at the least a hybrid approach. You'll have to include grammar and other typically non-appetizing parts of language study- without that the progress that you make will more so be geared towards reading and listening as opposed to speaking and writing. But to be fair it depends entirely on what your goals are.

On YouTube there's a channel "LearnRussianWithRT" - I like the videos "Живая речь" which has a question being answered in Russian.
