Yes, of course. I did not mean in any sense that I bring home $4500 in extra spending money. Everybody with a brain knows that my job does not pay for my car, gasoline, food, underwear, toothpaste, tobacco, gluesticks, pencil sharpeners, and Dr. Schoal's Gel Shoe Inserts. The point is to note the difference in salaries between the United States and Russia. I am not rich by American standards, probably upper-middle class. Also, one thing to note is that in MOST American families, both the husband and the wife work full-time jobs, bringing their salaries much higher than mine. My wife does not work but cares for our 3 young children. Now, remember, when both mom and dad work, they must pay at least $400 per child to day care.

Anyway, yes...I KNOW i'm not rich. Again, just making a comparison here.

Gracious! Maybe I should have read everybody's posts before I responded today. First of all, Dobry, your math is WAY off. At $4500 a month, that's right at $54,000 a year, not $64,000. Pretty big difference. (If you want to get technical, my salary is $55,000 a year. That's $4583.3333333 a month. After taxes and health insurance, I get exactly $3525.58 a month. But that's not the point.) And yes, I do live in Delaware, where the cost of living is fairly high. As a comparison, when I lived in Tennessee (much lower cost of living) I made only $28000 per year. And we lived very comfortably. But even in Delaware I would now be considered "Upper Middle Class". I already said this. I am living quite comfortably. I apologize, I didn't say "just O.k." to mean "just barely surviving". I intended it to mean "I'm doing just fine.", or "I'm A.O.K.!"

Again, my point was not to make me sound "Rich and Famous". Or to make me sound like I can't pay my bills. The point is...I make probably 5-10 times that of the average Russian, and the cost of goods are probably very comparable. I do fine, but I don't see how i could make it if I only earned $10,000 a year.

Are we all clear?

The key to my success (as a broke college student) is taking advantage of freebies! For example, brand name clothing, don't need that; my 1997 POWERLIFTER CONVENTION shirt works just fine, as does my shirt that advertises the 1999 National Spelling Bee! (BOTH FREE!)
I don't think I've purchased a shirt for over a year; I either rely on freebies or receive them as gifts. Same goes for jeans and the like.

Also, eating Ramen noodles helps.

AMEN TO THAT! I was the same way in college. Brand name NOTHING! Food Lion brand peanut butter, Faded Glory blue jeans (the wal-mart brand). Have you heard of Goodwill Stores? It's used (but clean) clothing, really cheap. That's how we get by now. Three children can be really expensive. Brand-name diapers like Pampers, Huggies, nope! Actually, we've found that the Wal-mart diapers are the best.

My work usually gives away 2-3 shirts a year, and I can wear those for a couple years. A few things I must buy new...i won't wear used underwear. Yuck!

kalinka, он жертва пропаганды или ещё просто молод. I said "he is a propaganda victim or he is a young man". When I was younger (20-25) I thought the same way. BTW, your salary is not bad, about $1000 a month, I wounder why you are so angry and dissatisfied?

In Soviet Time, we never shout concerning the salaries, in why everyone paid same much money.

Ну, большие или маленькие цены -- понятие, конечно, относительное. Я могу лишь сказать, что в Москве цены безусловно высокие сравнительно даже с областью -- если отъехать на электричке километров на сто, продукты и пр. уже заметно дешевле. Тем более, с черноземными областями сравнивать Москву по ценам не стоит -- там все куда дешевле.

Ну, значит, я о них плохо думал. У нас на 65-70 рублей "до пуза" точно не наешься.

Это касается в первую очередь импортных товаров: чем дальше от столицы, тем длиннее цепочка перекупщиков. Поэтому, если говорить не о продуктах, а, например, о тонкой электронике, у нас все дороже.
