vkontake is massive in russia and i dont think it will just disappear when facebook is in russian. i use both but like the fact that on vkontakte you can look at almost anyones profile, it's a bit more interesting in that respect

V Kontakte, being a clone of facebook sort of won't be necessary once facebook is in Russian.

I don't think it's all about privacy which we certaily don't respect. Just in Russia we prefer to make our own projects with similar services. Linkedin - Мой Круг, Classmates - Одноклассники, Facebook - Вконтакте, Youtube - Rutube etc. It's because it's easier for FSB to have full control over them. We even bought Russian part of Livejournal to have more control. So Facebook has no chance to become popular in Russia. Like a year ago or maybe even earlier Myspace came to Russia but I didn't hear it become any popular.

By the way does Вконтакте support groups, is there MasterRussian there? I remember MA created a group on Myspace but only few people joined it for some reason and there was no discussions there. Is Вконтакте any better?

For sure, it supports groups. We have a small circle of forumites there. I can't say it's created for promotion, just for us to stay in touch.
