Is Russian an easy language ?

In the intro to my copy of The Penguin Russian Course, which I am slowly getting through ( almost half-way) it says that Russian is an easy language to learn..... because the grammar is very regular etc. Having reached the heady heights of chapter 14, I find this hard to agree with. What do others think?

The Russian grammar is very regular? Never knew it.
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

The grammar is not that bad once you understand the principle of each case. After that you just need a lot of practice putting it into use to drum it into your head. Find a Russian speaker and practice with them and have them correct your mistakes. Pay them if you have to.....it is worth it.

For English speakers Russian is harder to learn than other Germanic languages or Romance languages, but much easier to learn than Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

that website is ridiculous. Chinese is very easy compared to Russian as there is very little in the way of grammar (of course the writing is something else entirely). German is very difficult yet that site says it's easier than Indonesian, which is really quite simple.
To the original poster, Russian is very difficult, you have to be very dedicated.

I guess it depends on your opinion. Because German is not difficult at all. I "learned" German for 2 years and spent a month in Berlin 3 years ago and haven't really learned any German since. I've lost most of my speaking ability but I can watch German TV or listen to German radio and pretty much get everything their saying.

I wouldn't say Russian is so much hard as it is just frustrating. Just when you think you've got some aspect of it, something pops up and you've just made some stupid mistake.

But its good that you've started with the penguin book. Finish that and learn as much of the vocab and grammar as you can and you'll be a good couple steps ahead of the regular Russian learners. Its a good jumping off point, so don't give up!

These are all good replies so far. As for Scandinavian languages, yes, they are v. hard. I do have a slim volume called Norwegian in Three Months! But then again, I have another slim volume called Learn Greek in 35 years. A very funny book that is, though it might be 25 years I can't quite remember.
I think the truth is that it is not the grammar that is so bad ( though it IS bad) it is the alienness of the vocabulary. Then, of course, there is the handwriting.

Most people who say that Chinese is the most difficult have never tried learning Russian. Everybody I know who has studied both says that Russian is much harder than Chinese or any other language they've studied.

It's not that hard to learn the basics of Russian, but to become fluent is a huge challenge and, like others have said, requires real dedication.

Finnish is not a Scandinavian language. It has abt. 12 cases. Norwegian has 2 cases (like English). The Norwegian grammar is very similar to the English one.

Compared to Russian it's a piece of cake but compared to the romance languages it's much harder.
I've heard that Icelandic and the Basque language are two of the most difficult.

I don't think that French (a romance language) is easier than German... Everyone says the opposite... Me too.

French is a little more tricky than Spanish but German grammar is nightmare.

Для меня как раз "nightmare" - французская грамматика. Мне одних вопросительных предолжений хватит на полгода ночных кошмаров.

I think, native Chinese speakers believe that Russian is much harder than their language.

Говорят, что английский язык — самый легкий для того, чтобы научиться говорить на нём плохо, но самый трудный, чтобы научиться говорить хорошо. Русский язык труден для обеих целей.

    I agree with this.

Delichon, If I were a native Enlish speaker, I could tell you, if it's hard or not to learn Russian from scratch. But I speak Russian since my childhood. Frankly speaking, I still cannot decline long compound numerals withot making mistakes (once we carried out an experiment and I wasn't the only native speaker who couldn't). But I don't care about it.

    Please correct my mistakes.

    Исчисляемое. Ты права. A nightmare.
