Hmm. I've always heard it was "international network", although "internet" (between networks) would make some sense too. Regardless, capitalise it.
I do of course know the prefix 'inter-' .

Which would make sense because it was originally a domestic Defense network; pretty sure they weren't hoping to hook up with the Soviets!Originally Posted by Rtyom

It wasn't called the Internet back then, y'fool .Originally Posted by Barmaley

It was then followed by the opening of the network to commercial interests in 1995. Important separate networks that offered gateways into, then later merged into the Internet include Usenet, Bitnet and the various commercial and educational X.25 networks such as Compuserve and JANET. The ability of TCP/IP to work over these pre-existing communication networks allowed for a great ease of growth. Use of Internet as a phrase to describe a single global TCP/IP network originated around this time.

I think I'll just play the oh-so-convenient "Wikipedia is not a reliable, peer-reviewed source of information" card here!Originally Posted by Seventh-Monkey

Well, I don't agree with that Wikipedia article, so I think I'll go change it so I'm right...
Precisely. That's what an American congressman did. He decided he didn't like what was written about him, so his staffers changed it!Originally Posted by basurero

I know that the first netwrok was launched back in 1969 and called ARPAnet.

I thought it was DARPAnet, but google seems to prove you correct.Originally Posted by Rtyom

ARPA, the organisation, later became DARPA. I don't know if they added the 'D' to the name of the network.

Heh, I had no idea.
Anyway, you can see that (D)ARPANET is a proper noun, and today's Internet is pretty similar. Q.E.D. Reminds me, gotta look up what "c.f." stands for... aha, "confer", from Latin. I'm sure that should be "c'f.", but never mind.
