Can somebody suggest interesting talk radio stations which broadcast on the net? In English of course, better in American. No religion, no politics (well maybe a bit) and not boring.

Dimitri, can I ask you to just ignore my questions?

You've kind of narrowed it down quite a bit...What sort of subject matter are you interested in? Politics and sports represent much of talk-radio, and I'm assuming you don't have interest in baseball or American football. The one that jumps to my mind having ruled all this out is NPR (National Public Radio). It's a bit high-brow, but it can be good sometimes...You might try that...Quote:

NPR? Although I listen to this religiously, it is almost all politics! Ok, a little science and economics thrown in there, some great talk shows and cultural events, but no music and just talk. I love it, but I suspect this isn't exactly what netsurfer is looking for...
Kisses to NPR.
Well, I thought about that, but it tends to be more political *coverage* and less political SHOUTING MATCHES AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS type of thing...Besides, especially on weekends, they have unusual programming -- Prarie Home Companion, the Autotalk show, etc. And during days, it's typically classical or jazz...(I think local affiliates have a lot to do with programming though, so it may vary?)Quote:

The only radio show that I know of that is not sports or politics is probably perfect for you. It can be found broadcast seven nights a week and usually all night long. I think that it is broadcast over the short-wave bands too because i know that people in other countries such as New Zealand and Australia call in by telphone live sometimes to talk to the host. It is the Coast to Coast show.......used to be called the Art Bell Show. They stream link their shows over the internet but you have to pay for it ........$6.95 a month, less if you buy a subscription. Here is the link:

Just don't take it too seriously, m'kay? :DQuote:

Barmaley, you're right, listening about baseball or American football for a long time is kinda boring and of course I don't want to hear any crazy accent :)
DDT, thanks but unfortunately I can't pay in the Internet, my card doesn't work for online payments. And I'd like to listen to it for a while to decide whether I like it or not :) Anyway, I'll check the site maybe they have something for free.
Barmaley, I won't take it too seriouse, I promise :)
BlackMage, quit drinking that beer! :)
It looks like they have a free podcast offered...........but I don't know what a podcast is.
That's what I expected to find. It's just recordings which you can upload to your ipod (or another mp3 player) to listen to them later.Quote:

It's all so confusing. How can you decide what meaning it was used with? Since the meanings are opposite, how am I supposed to know what did you mean?
Like the last one - heinous. Longman dictionary says: American English spoken informal "extremely bad".
Wow, it's my 2000 post!
I admitt, it could be difficult to know, especially if it is written down. If you are in a real-life situation, however, you'll know from your fellow interlocutor's expressions etc....
You can also figure out from the context:
That sounds mean! You could, like, listen to it on the bus!
I fail to see how a radio station can be mean in the more common sense of the word... therefore we know something is amiss.... it must mean "COOL"
Sorry I can't explain stuff... I'm stupid....
Я поздравляю тебя с двухтысячным сообщением!
I see what you mean, but when there's no context, just a standalone phrase/word? I think you can only guess if it doesn't happen in real life.
Спасибо :)Quote:

Вот и учите все возможные языки... Ничего не выучишь. Это в любом случае утопия.
Hey guys, don't think that I'm lazy, well I am lazy but just a little :) Anyway, I took a look at NPR site and found out that they had podcasts of their programs. So I thought, Barmaley, kalinka and others who listen to NPR, could you suggest some particular programs? Here's the list http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/podca...php?type=topic
Эт ты к чему? :oQuote:

As far as I know, you have to have a iPod mp3 player to use podcasts.
Try this local NPR affiliate to listen over the net (just click "listen live" at the top):
http://www.wvtf.org/broadcastschedule.htm
I like "Whad'Ya Know" (a news-quiz show) and "A Prairie Home Companion" (a really good variety-type entertainment show) both on Sundays...
Oh, and please remember that in English we don't say "in the Internet" but "ON the Internet." Probably doesn't seem very logical, but that's the way it is... Remember you catch fish in nets, but you Google them on the net!
False.Quote:

Thanks, I found the first one as a podcast, as for the second one unfortunately they don't make podcasts:Quote:

Many listeners have asked us to make A Prairie Home Companion available as a podcast. There are several reasons why we are unable to do that at this time, and we've listed a couple of them below.
We cannot offer the whole show up because of rights issues with the musicians we feature on our show. Their intellectual property is being broadcast to the listening audiences. We would have to get each artists' permission, not only to distribute their music in this way, but they would also have to be comfortable with the fact that it could be shared easily...
Thanks for the correction and the explanation, I'll remember it :)Quote:

The link I gave you was the local affiliate, whereas NPR is the national headquarters for it all. It'll just be somewhat different content on different schedules.Quote:

I'm not sure about the time issues though; you should be able to listen at like 2000-2200 Moscow time on Sunday though; not sure if that's appealing to you...Quote:

Anything that can play an .mp3 file can play a podcast. (Assuming they don't use some weird proprietary format)Quote:
