The charge against me was that I should let the catholics have their beliefs since the rest of us don't have to act like a catholic. Point taken on the religious pressure on legislators, DDT. Didn't know of these cases, one learns something every day. I agree that, ideally, nobody should not lobby legislators and the world would be a happier place. But then it is very understandable that the people with the influence will use it, especially when it concerns the very core of their belief. Whether their belief is good or bad, is very subjective. Sometimes they go way too far (like in El Salvador (btw, is that spanish for the Savior?)) and sometimes not far enough (China, you MUST have only one kid, abort the rest)

I seem to sense a hint from господин DDT that he thinks the (vatican) catholics are brain-washed people, who are imposing their will on us enlightened ones. Catholic robots?

The question of abortion is a tricky one. Should we take abortion when we feel like it? At what point is it too late to take an abortion? When does life start?

If China didn't have a one-child policy their country would be a fucking shithole. BTW, the policy only applies to densely populated areas and not to rural areas or ethnic minorities.

No matter how isloated the policy is, just its existence is the most clear violation of human rights since sine Ivan the Terrible killed his son.

It may be a violation of human rights, but the quality of human life there would be a lot worse if they just let everyone has any many kids as they wanted.

That sounds good, let's put laws down so we can't drive cars or at least limit us to driving only once a week, because it damages our quality of life. Oh, might as well ban alcohol too. Fast-food joints? Close em. And maybe the thing that reduces the quality of life the most: ban TV! Make everybody run 10 km every day and eat ALL their broccoli, not just the flowery part. If we are going to care about our citizens quality of life, we shouldn't just prevent them from having babies. But, we agree that babies is the most damaging to the quality of life. Just think about all the screaming and changing of diapers. Oh, and the incessant gulping! Forbid the child! Think of what happens if all the babies scream at once, the counter-force of their scream would push the Earth out of orbit, this is for global security's sake!!!

China has been encroaching on Russian territory in the Far East for decades. They have been crossing the Amur River and illegally settling around Habarovsk because of the abundance of rich farm land there. China does not have enough farmable land of it's own and covets Russia's.

I would be happy if Bush told me I can't have more than one child because a billion of my compatriots are also going to have more than one child and screw up the country. Living conditions in China would plunge back to sub-Saharan Africa levels if they just let the population grow freely. I'm pretty sure they'll ease off on it as the country's infrastructure grows to support more people.
