i was just there over the weekend... to be honest... i found it slightly slower/ clearer and easier to understand.... than the russian spoken in moscow / n. novgorod... seemed a bit faster / slurred to me.... hrmmmm.....

in terms of advise...

best way to overcome the fear of speaking IMO is .... if at all possible take a holiday to russia... once you are forced into situations where you HAVE to use it... you will find (or at least i found) that you find your confidence very quickly --- there is nooo better feeling in the world than being told how well you speak a language by native speakers!

Well yea, a begining will have a hard time understanding moscow speak.
