Liliger born at the Novosibirsk zoo.

Coffeecup! ... this came on our local news last night and I was sooooo happy as I like "I know someone from that town!"

A rare hybrid of a lion and a liger, itself the offspring of a lion and a tiger, has been born at the Novosibirsk zoo.

This news also filled all the Novosibirsk's news sites. I remember some years ago when liliger's mother was born here at the Novosibirsk's zoo she became the number one news also and all the people filled up the zoo to see her.

The question is whether this can happen naturally, or if they've made this creature in a lab?
If it can happen in nature I don't mind it.

But why did they give it to a cat to raise? Why not the mother, or at least a tiger or a lion....?

This sounds like something out of a children's story "The animal that didn't know what it was..." He is not a lion, a tiger or a cat!
I hope there is another creature like him somewhere...

Actually, the reason was simple: The mother lacked the mother's milk. So the liliger was fed by humans with artificial milk and the house cat was just to make a company and some sort of cat's care.

Mule - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Mules and hinnies have 63 chromosomes, a mixture of the horse's 64 and the donkey's 62. The different structure and number usually prevents the chromosomes from pairing up properly and creating successful embryos, rendering most mules infertile.

There are no recorded cases of fertile mule stallions. A few female mules have produced offspring when mated with a purebred horse or donkey.[9][10] Herodotus gives an account of such an event as an ill omen of Xerxes' conquest of Greece in 480 BC: "There happened also a portent of another kind while he was still at Sardis,—a mule brought forth young and gave birth to a mule" (Herodotus The Histories 7:57).

Since 1527 there have been more than 60 documented cases of foals born to female mules around the world.[9] There are reports that a mule in China produced a foal in 1984.[11][12] In Morocco, in early 2002, a mare mule produced a rare foal.[9] In 2007 a mule named Kate gave birth to a mule son in Colorado"

So there is no way that anybody would know FOR SURE that there is no liligers in the wild
BTW ligers has been known to humans since 19 century
