    Kazan State University/КГУ

Has anyone studied at KGU as part of their summer program before (or with their faculty for foreign language learners in some other program?)? I'm particularly interested if you took the the individually-arranged route rather than as part of your university. I'm interested in doing it, but have no idea about what to expect in terms of quality or academic culture...
Заранее благодарю всех за исправление ошибок в моём русском.

What is wrong with Tatarstan? Leo Tolstoy was at KGU ! Besides I just got of the phone with some guy in Kazan just 2 minutes ago after he painfully put up with my terrible and pathetic attempt to communicate in Russian about a job there. He seemed real nice, especially since the people down in Bashkortistan used to to just hang up on me!

Tatarstan is one of the richest regions in Russia. With possible exception of Moscow, St. Petersburg and some West Siberian regions. Having rich oil deposits at one's disposal has some advantages, after all.

    Is it safe there?

на лицето ми студено грях в надежда да превърна.."

Seriously, I don't think you'll find Kazan any more dangerous than, say, Moscow or St.Petersburg.

And is it usually safe in Russia? or does the level of safety vary from region to region?

Vary, but in Russia it is usually safe, as in Kazan.

All the time that I've lived in Moscow I've been robbed just the once, which means Moscow is relatively safe.

    You are really lucky.
Only a few between my friends can say the same.
I mean that the others have not been robbed even the once.

I was about 13 years old at the time, so I couldn't really do much with regards to defending myself. I could have tried running but the situation didn't really afford me an opportunity to run away.

I think that Russia is safer for Russians than it is for foreigners, be they tourists or just иноземцы. Safety is inversly proportional to the tone color of your skin. The darker = the less safe.

Well, I am in the process of obtaining another formal invitation for Kazan this time. So, well see how this one goes! Maybe me and old Barfly will meet up there.

Well the Kazan deal is off for the time being anyway.

So, what about MGU? Anyone tried the Russian course there? .........Er.....anyone tried any courses anywhere in Russia? How fluent do you think one could become after studying Russian for 3 years and then spending 6 weeks in the MGU immersion course?

Hmmmm? ....I want answers! OK and some money, too.
