Welcome. You'll be speaking Russian in no time at all just as soon as you begin to visit this forum and speak with us.

I have often been considered less than a "real Russian" by those who have emigrated to America because I do not speak the language as well as they, or because I travelled often while young and did not get the "full" experience of living there.
Personally, I distinguish two kinds of emigrants - those, who emigrated out of their own free will and those who emigrated in childhood with their parents. I don't care much for the first but perfectly loyal to the second. (Of course that's my personal opinion on the matter).

basically if I am not 100% fluent in the Russian language and know every small bit of Russian pop culture
You didn't miss a thing... believe me. Actually you may consider yourself lucky because of that.
Send me a PM if you need me.

Clearly, I am the one who's been a very bad boy. Well, I have an excuse, for what it's worth, my ancestors were from Germany and France.

Welcome to the forum, Nastya, and don't worry about the fact that you have emigrated, as you are not the only evil person around here. We don't ask for "прописка".

Of course I am not Russian, but if you feel at heart Russian and you understand Russia, you understand the people, you feel the language, and you can tell a Russian from a Pole at a mile's distance, then you are Russian. Of course, it is hard to do all this if you don't live in Russia. We foreigners can only hope...

Oh, and it is important to have watched "Ирония судьбы" at least 10 times.

Is it really necessary to insert extra pronouns in cases like that? That redundance of the English language has always amazed me and amazes still

You could have missed the pronoun I, but the verb 'to be' is necessary:

I don't care much for the first but am perfectly loyal to the second.

I might as well have been born here. I find myself very sad because of it and have had difficulty befriending some Russians and Ukrainians for it. (Of course, there have been twice as many who have become wonderful friends!)
Well, not to offend you but yes, of course it makes people like you less Russians. Since you don't remember the language(which already means a lot) and not familiar with Russian life too much, what do you expect of this people to think of you?

So welcome to MR and I hope you will fix this problem soon.

И я бы скорее перевёл это как "like" или "something like", чем "a".

    Kalinka,
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.
