    International Translation Day Sep, 30

International Translation Day is celebrated every year on 30 September on the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered as the patron saint of translators. The celebrations have been promoted by FIT (the International Federation of Translators) ever since it was set up in 1953. In 1991 FIT launched the idea of an officially recognised International Translation Day to show solidarity of the worldwide translation community in an effort to promote the translation profession in different countries (not necessarily only in Christian ones). This is an opportunity to display pride in a profession that is becoming increasingly essential in the era of progressing globalisation.

The patron saint of all translators is St. Jerome ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Jerome )

    Congratulations to all fellow translators!

Well that's nice! I didn't know there was a patron saint for that... (In fact I hardly know anything about patron saints since they don't really exist in protestant Christianity.)

С праздником, переводчики! I know Оля works in that field and I am sure there are others. This might not be the best time to bring up the Italian saying "traduttore, traditore" (translater, traitor). But obviously that statement refers to the diffculty of faithfully expressing the sense of the original in the new language. Having said that, I have a friend who does translation and interpretation and he told me that interpreters sometimes make up things if they fail to get the sense of what was said. I remember a story he told me about an English speaker who had to interpret from Polish into Japanese...But that is interpretation. Translators, having more time, shouldn't have to resort to that. I have nothing but respect for translators; it is not an easy task and it facilitates the spread of ideas.

С праздником!!! Я про это никогда не слыхала. Здорово, что у нас есть специальный такой международный день и даже покровитель.
