I need help with math - factoring

This is brief... but can anyone factor the following:

    3a^2 + 12 =

So far I have 3(a^2 + 4), but it isn't simplified. I need help on the next step.

    Thanks.

    3a^2 + 12 = 0
    3a^2=-12
    a^2=-4

I'm not solving an equation. I'm only factoring.

After asking other people on another forum the same question, I finally decided the final, simplified answer is 3(a^2+4).

    Do you agree?

Yeah, we agree. There's nothing else to do with it. But I don't see a point in "simplifying" things until you know what's after equals sign.
    What if 3a^2 + 12 = a^2?

    3a^2 + 12 = 3(a^2 + 4) .

    Громозека, разве 3a^2 + 12 = a^2?

It depends on the level of math you're in. If you haven't done imaginary numbers yet, then yes, I agree with you. The function a^2+4 never crosses the axis, so it can't be factored into the (a+root1)(a-root2) form.

If you are doing imaginary numbers in this class, then it factors to (a+2i)(a-2i). The imaginary numbers are not very useful in the real world, but it is something they like to haze students with in some of the higher level math classes.

It is impossible to factor in real numbers. However, if complex operands are allowed:

    3a^2 + 12 = (sqrt(3) a + 2 sqrt(3) i) (sqrt(3) a - 2 sqrt(3) i)

Here sqrt(a) stands for square root of a, i is obviously sqrt(-1).

    3a^2 - 12 = 3(a^2 - 4) = 3(a - 2)(a + 2)

Is this your idea of simplification?

Of course, not. But I was asked to *factorise* this polynomial, so I tryed to do so. (Of course, if moving 3 "out of brackets" is allowed, everything is much simpler )
