It is impossible to factor in real numbers. However, if complex operands are allowed:
3a^2 + 12 = (sqrt(3) a + 2 sqrt(3) i) (sqrt(3) a - 2 sqrt(3) i)
Here sqrt(a) stands for square root of a, i is obviously sqrt(-1).
Is this your idea of simplification?
Of course, not. But I was asked to *factorise* this polynomial, so I tryed to do so. (Of course, if moving 3 "out of brackets" is allowed, everything is much simpler )
