Ooh i want in on this, since everyone's already replying to Sofia. hi Sofia! I'm Jack. I'm pretty much in your same situation, learning this very detached language. Well, detached for me. I'm the only one the fivehundred kids in my school who wants to learn Russian. i was feeling a bit lonely until i came here. I've been studying for just short a year. София, if i were you, I'd memorize case RIGHT from the beginning. I'm paying for it now because I can't for my own sake memorize cases. Also, invest in some coursebooks. Do NOT buy phrasebooks, they'll only teach you how to ask where to hang your coat. look for 'Living Language' books. I bought this package that has a dictionary, a coursebook, and three cd's [VERY helpful when trying to pronounce things]. Look for a penpal, too.

this is the first forum i've ever posted in, so don't attack me if I accidentally strike a taboo. Спасибо!

OOH and read "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess. I always find it helpful because Burgess uses like russian for slang and once you read for a long time you get addicted and it's hard not to use these common russian words in your everyday english, not to mention russian.

    Больше знать, легче продалжать!

Don't worry Jacko, Australians change the end of a lot of names. ie: Gary = Gaz Barry = Baz

Gary to Baz? How new! I think everyone over here has been referring to me like this because of all the late Michael Jackson over-exposure.

I'm not sure if I should be posting this in a 'general discussion' forum, maybe it should be in something else, but does anyone know about the education system in Russia? I mean like colleges and foreign exchange and such. I read that MGU charges 1600 a year [i think] for american students after all the testing and document fees are paid.

Classes are pretty cheap if you want to go directly through a russian university. The reason that many college students go through other organizations or institutions is to help transfer credits, and guarantee that credit will be received. Of course these programs cost more, more like 8000 a semester, but usually offer more in terms of support, organized trips if you want stuff like that, etc...But the transfer credit is the most important part. So if you have already graduated from college or are not worried about transferring any credits to your home instution, going directly through a Russian university is not a bad option. Save a lot of money

Я очень хорошо, но мей русский язык не жороший достаточно говорить тебя как в Россиа

(Could some superb russian speaker please verify the correctness of that? Only looked up 1 word, достаточно.)
Мне очень хорошо, а я не достаточно говорю по-русски, чтобы тебе говорить как Русский.

    That's probably wrong too.
What you are saying in English is a bit long-winded,
I am very good, but my Russian isn't good enough to talk to you like in Russia.

My version is supossed to say: "I am very well, but I don't speak Russian well enough to talk to you like a Russian." Meh.

Лучше cказать только: "Я не говорю по-русси очень хорошо"
