    Greek and Russian

Come January I'm heading off to Thessaloniki, Greece for school. I know maybe 100 words in Greek, so this should be interesting. What's sweet about the deal I've worked out with my school is, I'll be able to study in St.Petersburg for 2-4 semesters after my first year in Greece. And they pay for everything while I'm in Russia and Greece. Yep, it's insane.

I was wondering if anyone had any kind of back ground in Greek. I figure it would wise to know a bit more than I do, before diving right on in.

I don't have any background in Greek, but doesn't Cyrillic come from (or was based on) Greek?

Γία σου! Around about 862 AD Saints Cyrill and Methodius went up among the heathens to give them an alphabet. It was the glagolitic. http://www.crystalinks.com/glagolitic.html

I had thought that Cyrill gave them the - surprise - Cyrillic alphabet, but apparently he had given them the glagolitic. Search around and you will find where the cyrillic letters came in, many of which are clearly from Greek letters.

My soccer coach was writing in Greek and my friends and I noticed that there were some letters in the Greek alphabet that are also in the Russian alphabet. Djmihow is probably right when he says that Russian is a mix of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. I hadn't heard before now of Russian coming from Hebrew. I was going to learn that languages this year, and probably will next year. Maybe I will see some similarities.

I'd say that the Russian SH letter came from the Hebrew "shin" or the Arabic "siin/shiin?.

Cyrillic used to have more letters, such as Feta (a mispronunciation of Greek theta).

I read that Ш and Щ come from Hebrew shin, and also Ц may have ceom from hebrew.

I think Cyrillic developed in Serbia.

St. Cyrill and Methodius were from Macedonia (that's Greek Macedonia), not to be confused with Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia
