It is fair! What effect did they think the demolishing of the monument could make? It was dedicated to neither the Soviet reign, nor the Soviet troops who were stationed in postwar Estonia. It was a memorial to several young men who had lost their lives defending their own and other Estonians' land.
Latvia and Estonia are teasing a bear. It won't be surprise if it bites off their heads.
PS: I would appreciate it if anyone would correct my errors in the above.
Thanks for your corrections chaika!
Fairly! == This word makes no sense to me.

Instead of "neither to X nor to Y" I would write "to neither X nor Y," and I would not repeat "young," but these are stylistic quibbles.
I think he means "It's only fair."Quote:

"fair" makes no sense. Leofs' statement does not imply fairness on the behalf of Estonians. He must be thinking of another word.
I wished to say it was justly, naturally, something what one could expect. So my dictionary says - fairly - справедливо. The events which happened afterwards the demolishing of the statue were fair.
OK but what you have written about the situation makes me think that you don't that it is fair.
I know it's a typo, but I corrected so that others could understand.Quote:

Then I have to explain myself. I think the way the Estonian government shows its antipathy to the Soviets is unfair. But I do think it's fair that they got those chaotic situation in the streets of Tallin. Both Latvia and Estonia play with the fire.
Another bs I don't understand. The hell with the monuments. It ain't that urgent a thing to worry about. :x
In other words, what goes around comes around!
I have heard it suggested that they removed the monument to make room for some sort of corporation to put a building. What do you think?
What for would they dismantle the monument otherwise? Mercantilistic thinking is no thing I wonder about since my growing-up.
There was no such a reason for replacing the graves and the monument, I suspect. The only reason was to provoke Russia.
Thank you for correction tohca! :D
It's just two groups of idiot nationalists shouting at each other.
It is of course!
Why do you automatically assume that being occupied by the SU was subjectively better than being occupied by the Nazis? They were both unwelcome, brutal, oppresive, foreign powers. The only difference, from Estonia's point of view, is that the SU won and was able to build monuments with insincere and hypocritical inscriptions.Quote:

The inscription on this monument was, to my memory, "to the liberators of Tallinn". The people buried there did take their part in liberating Estonia from fascism, and they died fighting against the Nazi forces. The Soviet occupation of Estonia, if they suppose that it was occupation, could happen only after the German military regime which previously controlled the country was defeated. By that time they were already dead. So by replacing the monument they show their disrespect to the young people who lost their lives saving the world from Hitler's Nationalsozialismus, nothing else. If the sad and tired man on the monument hurts their nationalistic feelings, they should attend a psychiatrist.Quote:

Neither the Nazis nor the SU ever intended to do anything of the sort, they both intended to occupy and subjugate. The only difference between the two is that the SU won and got to write the post-war propaganda, and Germany didn't.Quote:

So, if the US military bases still are in German, Japan, Iraq, Afganistan etc. dont you think that these countries are not free now? Because the existence of foreign military forces is OCCUPATION... Or may be these countries just not quite "liberated"...Quote:

Slightly different situation though. Estonians went practically overnight from an Estonian minority living in a country with a large Russian majority to an Estonian majority living in a country with a large Russian minority. It was a complete, instant role-reversal. Has that ever happened anywhere else? It was always going to result in resentment, on both sides.Quote:

Scotcher, awa' ye glaikit russophobe!
Stop worrying about Estonia. It lies on the outskirts of the civilization and will always be there. That dismantling of the monument means nothing to history (neither does Estonia itself). They jump out of their shoes to take its part in the wolrd's history but this part will remain small and unimportant. Everyone would hate to be unimportant but somebody just has to be. Estonia WAS unimportant in the past, Estonia IS unimportant now and Estonia will always be unimportant in the future. Just don't talk about it.
I think the word provoke, instead of tease, would be better in this sense.Quote:

Second, none of the countries you mentioned were ever occupied by a second party, so there was no-one to liberate them from. They were attacked, defeated, and occupied. End of. 'Liberate' never had anything to do with it, except in the more desparate justifications of the American right in the run up to the two recent wars, which no-one else bought for a second anyway. So your comparison is utterly meaningless.
Thirdly, no, I don't think they are all free. I think Japan and Germany are free, because they were handed back sovereignty decades ago, and have had democratically elected governments ever since. They were occupied as long it took to establish that new government. Yes, there are still US and British forces in Germany, and US forces in Japan, but they are there with the consent of those country's governments (in fact, the US has threatened to remove it's bases from Germany many times, and each time the german government has complained, because it would damage the local economies). Iraq and Afganistan are certainly not free at the moment (not that they were ever free before), but those occupations aren't going to last one second longer than is necessary, purely because they are so expensive and unpopular with the populations of the occupying countries.
Estonia, on the other hand, was annexed into a totalitarian empire for half a century. How you can even make the comparison with a straight face is beyond me. Unless you think Iraq and Afganistan are about to become the 51st and 52nd states of the USA?
I don't even know what you are trying to say here, but apparently it involves calling me a russophobe. Just the usual pathetic name-calling nationalists always revert to when someone refuses to side with their hysterical position then. Why didn't you go the whole hog and call me a fascist?Quote:

Quote:
