it's not so bad if you take into account the fact that the whole movie is stupid (launching two space shuttles right next to each other and at the same time, how stupid is that?) And the cosmonaut has a very funny line, something like: Russian, American it doesn't matter, everything is made in Taiwan"

yeah OK I don't like it much here either. El Casey you had some good points, especially about the educational costs; it's RIDICULOUS!

But besides that, I don't like to complain much. I'm very lucky

Russians: Don't feel hurt by Hollywood. Any non-american is bound to die and be portrayed in some funny way...

    however...

did anyone see Enemy at the Gates? What are your thoughts of this Hollywood production?

Here is a rather slashing review I agree with.

Movies are about the box office, and the box office is not made in Russia. I am surprised anyone is looking for historical truth or any of this nonsense in a stupid motion picture. They are produced to entertain on a boring rainy day, go to the historical archives or textbooks to dig out facts. Show me a single movie that would be feasible in every aspect. Once Russians learn to make blockbusters, they can portray themselves any way they want, as salt of the Earth, gods or masters of the Universe. Until then, whoever is paying the most is the one getting the most love and attention, it is about time to get used to it.

Being offended by anything in any movie is, well, really really pointless. A film doesn't have a moral obligation to protect your sense of justice or dignity, as you are voluntarily paying to see someone else’s interpretation of a story. Studios make what sells...so maybe if people just stopped paying to see so many dumb movies in the first place they would actually be doing something about the problem.

    Funny review

Как режиссеру не пришло в голову поставить главных героев на колени перед ТАКИМ портретом?

I liked the movie quite a bit. The very first american movie I ever watched where they showed Russian as normal humans, not those stupid idiots. Another one which was very well done in this aspect is "Widowmaker", about that submarine.

Hollywood makes stereotypical roles for all nationalities, including Americans. For example, in a horror movie, most people know the black character is going to die first. It happens all the time. Women are perceived as stupid. Cops are supposed to be bribe accepting, evil doers, so on and so forth. How can you enjoy a movie if you're so worried about what the filmmaker is trying to portray against your nationality, race, religion, whatever? You don't think that Americans are portrayed as stupid people in foreign films? I highly doubt it.

My protest to Hollywood. I know that Hollywood is aspecially inti-German! There are so many movies where they kill Germans. And look at Freddy Kruger! What nationality he is?

    Ban Hollywood.

And why Russians do not protest and speak about Freddy? What a selfish people! (just kidding).

Some of my favorite crazy russian guy quotes from Armageddon.

"American components, Russian components, all made in TAIWAN!"

"Do not be touching my uncle, you know? He is the genius of my family. He work at bomb factory. He make tip of the bomb. You know, the thing that finds New York, or Washington."

"In Russia I am a very big man" - Talk about an ego trip.

After he draws a straw, "Is this good, or bad?"

    "I am not gas station!"

That is pretty funny! But the author seems to have forgotten something - the movie wasn't meant for Russians, or even for anybody who knows the language or history or culture . Yes, it is supposed to be about Russians, it is supposed to be about a major event in recent Russian history, but Russians themselves weren't supposed to watch it. For example:

Почему в фильме нет действительно рапространенных лозунгов тех лет...?
Because nobody watching the film is supposed to know the difference. I watched the movie when I could barely read a few words of it on a page stitting in front of me. Flashing by in a movie, it all looked like a just bunch of cyrillic to me. Funny foreign lettering.

Почему режиссер не поинтересовался о стандартных взаимоотношениях двух русских, находящихся в близких отношениях?
Same thing - how many Americans would appreciate the difference? If the director had taken the time to make the movie more authentic...only a few people in the intended audience would even realize it.

As for the well-fed soldiers and cute little boy and the hugging and dancing and all - how many Americans know their history? Before I started reading every book about WWII that I could get my hands on, I'd never heard of the siege of Stalingrad. Ever. And I was already in high school! Besides, who would go to the movies to see a bunch of starving, cold, exhausted people battling it out like the heroes they really were?

--And now, doggone it, I'm gonna have to watch "В бой идут одни старики" - узнать, пойму ли я
P.S. - Исправление ошибок в моих текстах на русском всегда приветствуется
