In my opinion, the best course out of all of those is the Penguin course. However, I would recommend you supplement what you learn with a beginning russian conversation book. That way, at least you can begin conversing with your russian friends. You will not learn this skill from the penguin course, so definitely get a conversational russian book.
Yes, go for the Pengiun one.

Ditto. Ignore the Idiot's Guide, save your money. I don't know anything about Penguin.Originally Posted by fantom605

Penguin.
Вот это да, я так люблю себя. И сегодня я люблю себя, ещё больше чем вчера, а завтра я буду любить себя to ещё больше чем сегодня. Тем что происходит,я вполне доволен!
But why should ignore the Idiot's Guide?...Originally Posted by Dobry
Penguin, I reckon.

I'm not an idiot so I don't recommend the Idiot's guide either...Originally Posted by fantom605

Because I had the Idiot's Guide some time ago. I think you're hard-earned-learning-Russian money is better spent on something else.Originally Posted by Soul212

The Penguin publishers should be sending out commission checks to all of you, considering how many ringing endorsements that book receives here.
I think the New Penguin course book is pretty good. I actually have both that AND The Idiot's Guide. Why not get both? They're not that expensive. The Idiots Guide might not go quite as in-depth as other grammar books, but you are likely to pick up some things of value within, and it is easy reading.
Where's my money, New Penguin?!?!?
The best book for beginning, IMHO, is this one:

Great for someone truly just starting out, I was a little overwhelmed by New Penguin when I first started.
