    In association with project chebbie

... a question for anyone who could possible know.

Does anyone know if it is at all possible to get the transcript of the cheburshka films? Online or where ever? I am going to call the company and request a transcript, but i want to know if there is an easier way. Thanks!

Cheburashka
    Английской название: Cheburashka
    Русское название: Чебурашка

Но русских субтитров там ооочень много.

Не-а, там не к этой серии субтитры... Та серия - про пионеров. Soviet propaganda.

Select and download the file you want. The files are RAR archives, so you need to get WinRAR. Use winrar to extract the archive, and open the .srt file. Thats it!

that's more irony then propaganda. That's what I love in Russian cartoons, a few layers of meanings. One layer is for children. One layer of humor and irony for adults, over that can be a layer for KGB guys.

I am afraid it is impossible to explain, even if you know perfect Russian. You need to grow up in that culture, late Brezhnev's era of Soviet Union. For example, in this small quote, with all those pressure of heavy propaganda, that we were living in the best country in the world, where everything is build for people, what a great level of life we have, while on West (Western Europe, USA) people suffer from unemployment, absence of medical care etc. And we believed that. At least when I was a pioner (not Pioner like now ). A joke of that time: "What constantly grows around us, but we do not notice that? - Our level of life".

Anyhow, here is in this quote, everyone was accepted into pioners, it was quite difficult to avoid being there, those, whose religion believes did not allow them to be pioners, komsomols were in big trouble. Everybody knew that. And authors of the cartoon made obvious sarcastic joking about that, kids believed that it was true, adults were laughing on that, and KGB guys could not do anything about that, because it sounded exactly like propaganda, the difference is just so tiny, because it sounds like grotesk, but you cannot proove that.

Unfortunately I watched Cheburashka really long ago, it was not my favorible cartoon (also quite nice), but I am sure watching it again will bring back some memories.

But still it is very very nice cartoon for kids. But some Russians may desagree with me about jokes in this cartoon, but hey, everyone got a right for their own opinion.

I see it differently, and I think you are reading too much into this. The "Pioners" (Pioneers) in those years were more like the Boy Scouts (girls were included). I did not see any particular propaganda other than building the character and all this. And yes, I forgot, it was important because the Prophet exhorted us so.

Well, you need to pass something to get into boyscouts. And that is a religion organization. Anyhow, I said how I felt, it is not necessary that everybody feels the same way. And being pioners we got such a load of propaganda...

The BSA is not a religious organization per se (otherwise they would no doubt try to receive classification as one from the IRS), although they do have certain requirements (like, I remember before I could be promoted from wolf to bear I had to fulfill some sort of bullshit "religious community service") and their motto is "On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight." I think the BSA's stance reflects that of the United States in general: "we respect the personal beliefs of every citizen as long as they aren't openly gay or an atheist." Incidentally, like the US, the BSA forbade women and minorities from becoming scout leaders until a few decades ago because they were considered incapable of leading children to glory the way only a strong, Caucasian man can. Hm...religious, white men teaching religious, white children children to fire weapons, survive in the wilderness, and be upstanding, loyal citizens. I believe the Hitlerjugend had a similar idea. I wonder if members of that group had the same stigma of looking like little dorky mama's boys that got laughed at by all the kids at school. Probably the compulsory national enlistment eliminated that feature of the BSA from the latter.

That being said, I think any organization which raises children in a pseudomilitary fashion is obligated to have a "load of propaganda," whether it's in the USSR, the USA, or some unimportant geographical region like wherever Mordan is from. The whole point is to mold impressionable children into responsible (read: obedient, civic-minded) adults. You could probably take the pioner handbook, change 5 or 6 words, draw a big eagle over all of the hammers and sickles, and nobody would know the difference. Or a swastika even. Or a picture of Jacques Brel. I mean, it's up to you.

Mike, I totally agree. But a kid with atheists point of view will not be allowed to join, will he?

Actually, I think an atheist, or anyone from any religious background (with the probable exception of Taliban, or devil-worshippers) can join BSA.

But, I'm not sure how far or how fast one can progress in BSA, because much of its foundation is based on Judeo-Christian ideas. But I think an Atheist, Buddhist, Muslim, or Hindi would be very welcome...in some, if not all BSA troops. I honestly don't remember any real references made to any religion, in scout activities...other than certain badge requirements, which were loosely relaxed and not followed much,,,and the pledge.

Unfortunately though as with almost any organizaton with many member groups, there will be variations of extremes between the groups.

But BSA for me seemed more about getting together and having fun, sports and games, learning some useful skills, and going camping. Don't remember ANY "religious indoctrination" as such. Oh, and we had NO "paramilitary training! LOL. I learned about guns and hunting from my grandfather and father, not from BSA...had no guns at all in BSA as a matter of fact. As I remember, BSA had almost no "paramilitary" element, other than wilderness survival skills...it was more about public service (charity) projects, and learning to feel responsibility to help your community.

I know when I was in scouting we had several non-religious/atheist members. Frankly...no one cared, not the scouts or our leaders. Don't know how it is now, though.
