Может переводиться, если это пересказ, к примеру. Но в нашей теме акцент не на использованном времени, а больше на предлоге. "Играть "В" роль" - так не говорят. Равно как не говорят return TO home...

It would sound more correctly like this:
Актриса вернулась домой играть роль.
No preposition is necessary.

Where's she? She's at home = дома
Where's she going (to)? She's going home = домой
