I think I figured out the answer to my own question. When тысяча is used by itself, it has a different spelling than when it is used with another number, such as десять тысяч.

Is it okay okay to pronounce тысяча without the а sound at the end? I've heard it pronounced both with and without the а sound at the end of the word, in multiple different learning resources.
