After reading this and the thread Olya referred to, I now understand. Thank you!
In some words like, АМЕРИКАНСКОГО, the bit which looks like "skogo" is pronounced "skovo". Why is this? And is I am reading a word how am I to know that I need to pronounce it in this way?
