There's not much "turning away": western Ukraine is generally anti-russian (and always was such), eastern Ukraine is mostly pro-russian (and remains such). The only thing changed is regime.

The sad Ukrainian story reminds me about the old truth: "The smart people are the ones, who can learn from somebody else's mistakes". Why before the "orange revolution" didn't them try to look at...

According to official election results (in January 2004, in Georgia) Saakashvili got 96%, or something alike.
Besides, it is well known, what at least 10-15% (probably, even more) of georgian...

And even before, in 1917 -- color was red. Remember? :)
