No, the author just means that his description turned out to be exaggerated or even wrong (and he didn't want it to be that way). He told the story as if the prosecutor and juty were overly cruel...
(In my notes) prosecutor and jury came out as some kind of beasts, counselor as sickly-sweet and me as a lamb.
