If I were in your shoes, I'd pick up SPb or Odessa (although it's not Russia, but the vast majority of people speak Russian there). In my opinion Moscow is too harsh city for a foreigner.

I suppose there is some organization (school, university, company...) that has invited you to Russia and it's their responsibility to take care of you i.e. to provide you with housing, guidance etc....
