Why is the genitive in animate form (I see that it says one friend)? I didn't think the genitive had a animate form. wouldn't you say for example: один книги?

Hello, I am confused with how to use the numbers in sentences. Is 1 always in the acc. (ex: "I know one friend" "I see twenty one dogs")? What about 2-4? examples would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
