For feminine ending with "а", the last letter of the stem determines the ending in plural (as Friendy said). It's not always ы. For example кошка/кошки, дорога/дороги....

Don't forget about hardness and softness - feminine nouns ending with я or ь use и, while those ending in а use ы.
