I think it could take quite a while to be able to communicate with those Russians. I really don't know what else I could say to help you greatly improve your Russian in a short period of time.

Continue learning the basic words. I don't think these are only welcome, hello etc. There are a lot more words that one should know at the very start. Maybe you should wait until your Russian classes...
