журнал = magazine but sounds like journal
газета = newspaper but sounds like gazette

дневник = journal pronounced dnevneek :o

These are cognates. These words have the same (or similar) meaning and pronunciation as in English.

"мама" is "mama".
"папа" is "papa".
"акт" is "act" as in "an act of a play"
"парк" is...

That is, without a doubt, the hardest region of learning a foreign tongue!
