how do you say "same"

we were in the same class (v adnoi classe) I know, but "we read the same book" or we went to the same town. I make the mistake of using то же самый, but is it better without самый? "тот же город"?

We were in the same class - Мы были в одном классе. Мы были в одном и том же классе.
I was in the same class as you. - Я был в том же классе, что и ты. Я был в том же самом классе, что и ты.

"тот же" and "тот же самый" usually imply reference to another sentence or another part of compound sentence. It is equivalent of "same as".

so it's okay to leave out самый?

In my examples - yes. It is used to make a logical emphasis: "тот же самый" = "exactly the same as"
