Thread: ый and ой

I'm having some trouble with this: Could someone record желточный and желточной, for example? Thanks.

Since ы is unstressed and since it is in the ending, which we tend to fade the difference will be minimal. One would have to stress this syllable to show the difference.

Actually, Spiderkat, listening to the recording on that website of those two inflections that I put in my post is just what confused me! I don't have a problem when they're both stressed... but for all the world that unstressed ой sounded like ы.

It seems that a lot of unstressed syllables sound the same or almost the same and when there's a difference it's sometimes imperceptible to a learner's hearing. Not to mention the difference of prononciation from one Russian native speaker to another.
Maybe you shouldn't try to make it sound that different or try to hear any difference.
