"The United States is to increase the cost of issuing its visas for Ukrainians, and Ukraine is getting ready to respond, the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine has said.

"According to the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States, from April 13 this year the U.S. Department of State is planning to increase the cost of processing applications for non-immigrant visas for citizens of the countries, with which the Unites States has a visa regime, including Ukraine," the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine Oleksandr Dykusarov has said at a briefing in Kyiv on Wednesday.

He added that, according to the U.S. side, this is connected with the mismatch of the cost of visas and actual expenditures on their issuing.

Thus, according to Dykusarov, the visa fee will increase from $140 to $160 and from $150 to $190 depending on the type of visa.

"In connection with this, the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine is working on the issue of changing the current visa fees for U.S. citizens to enter Ukraine. We are speaking about a parity approach," Dykusarov said.

This only apply to people who need to stay in Ukraine for more than 90 days, and therefore need a visa, right? Tourists can still go to Ukraine without a visa?

As far as I know, yes.

I did not need a visa when I visited Ukraine last summer. It was friendly and easygoing, no noticeably bureacracy affecting tourists.

I think it's the right move by Ukraine and I look forward to the day when the EU (and USA!) reciprocate.

Isn't it more likely that Ukraine changed its visa rules to deal with 3rd world migrants?

Can't be THAT many Americans that are living long term in Ukraine... Or? Those who do are probably professionals who are working there and benefitting the local economy, missionary type people or students.

I'd really recommend a trip to Ukraine, Kiev is very impressive - I really liked it, Odessa is cool and people are quite warm and genuinely kind to strangers. I never felt unsafe. Only drawback if you are trying to learn Russian is that most signs and public information are in Ukrainian.
