My experience is that NOONE likes to be the butt of a joke.
Here's a deaf joke -- that is, a joke that a deaf friend told me about hearing people...all this is told in sign language, and they "listen" with their eyes.
"I'm driving down Highway 50 out of Washington DC (a Federal Highway). I look in my rearview mirror and see the flashing lights of a police car. I pull over and roll down my window. The cop walks up and says something to me. I point to my ears and shake my head "no." He points to his ears and shakes his head "no." He then takes out a pad of paper and writes a note, then hands it to me. It says "Can you read?"
I write on the paper, "No"
He reads my answer, shrugs his shoulders, and waves me to drive on.
(At this point, all the deaf people listening to the joke fall apart laughing -)
Or another...
"I'm sitting in a bar watching a football game on TV and having a drink. A man sits down beside me and says something. I take out my pad and write to him that I'm deaf, but also say something about the game. He and I begin a "conversation" using the pad. A second man sits down on the other side. He watches us for a few minutes, and then asks for the pad. He joins our conversation. I need to go to the bathroom, so I head off. When I return, I see two hearing guys carrying on a conversation on a pad of paper!"
