    Longing to learn russian

    Hello,
I'm 19 yrs. old from the US. I'm attempting to learn Russian on my own, but I seem to get stuck when making words. I can read the letters and pronounce the words but can't seem to make the connection. I am willing to teach grammatically correct English if someone can teach me Russian. =]

You need not only a Russian speaker, but a Russian speaker who knows grammar and how to teach. If you live near a university I'd advise trying to take a course. Learning on your own is extremely difficult for most languages, Russian being one of them. Check the section here on learning Russian and look at the list of recommended books. At the least you would need, if studying alone, a book and CD. BTW, how do you know whether you are pronouncing the words correctly? How do you say что?

I'm close to never on skype but i guess i can try. As for the russian classes, it's close to impossible to find classes here for me. I think its pronounced shto (it may be wrong i know its spelled chto (w/out Cyrillic text) I listen to some russian music (just to hear it sung is similar to speech for me).

Skype is your best solution here, I think.

Also check out Language Learning with Livemocha | Learn a Language Online - Free!

In hindsight, I think that site helped me more than any other to learn the Cyrillic alphabet, even though it doesn't explain Cyrillic at all! I learnt a few words simply by ear, and then along with seeing them written down, began to understand the connection between the written symbols and the sounds. It was only when I came across something that I couldn't understand (for instance, why was "молодой" pronounced "muh-lah-DOY" instead of "mo-lo-DOY"?) that I referred to other sites.

Using this "learning by example" method, I actually found learning Cyrillic to be very easy, I think it took me less than a week. (And I hardly even use livemocha any more.)
