I have sad experience of bringning my friend from canada here and to register him as an emplyee. It's nearly impossible.

I don't get what you mean. Everybody who wants to have a russian citizenship must live in Russia for 5 years at least for 9 months in a year. So what's wrong with "со дня получения вида на жительство"?

Do you have a slightest idea of what it takes to become a legal employee in Russia? I guess you don't.

You can guess anything you want, but you have no idea what you're talking about. I have a friend who is a deputy chief (btw is it right? he is зам директора) of our employment center and he says it's easy. The employer should prove to employment center that this forigner has unique skills that local unemploees have not. It's easy, the local unemploees have not at least one thing - they don't speak foreign languages.

So all those tram drivers from Ukraine do drive trams in Moscow because they have skill of Ukrainian language. that makes a lot of sense.

Ask your friend how many foreigners are legal employees in your town.
And dont't use russian laws as f**ng manuals or u can get yourself into troubles.

I meant one shouldn't use the texts of russian laws as a manual for his legal actions. The better things are experience and advise. And laws are just the information.

Of course it's not, in Russian, that is. But the point is that in English it's used as a bad word. I just wanted to show everyone how a word can be neutral in one language and offensive in another. The same goes for негр in Russian. A black person in Russia has no ground to feel offended by this word if it's used by a Russian in the context of a conversation in Russian. Similarly a Russian person should feel offended if he/she hears "russki" from English speaking people in the context of an English conversation. Of course if the same English-speaking people use this word about him/her while speaking Russian, he/she won't feel offended at all. What is so difficult to understand here?

OK. e.g. You need to renew your technical inspection card for your car. Law says that you should pay the taxes and go to the certified autorepairs' to pass the inspection tests. But there's an option to go to mr.ZZZ give him 300 rur, copies of the papers and you get your card in one day. The card will be absolutely legal. What would you do? And how is it based on a law?

since when being from LA equals knowing how English is spoke in all her varieties? The only contexts I've heard people use the word russki in the UK have been less than polite. And believe me, I've heard from a lot of speakers of English (BrE mostly I admit) saying that it is indeed a bad word. It's the same as when some people in Russia say Гансы about zee Germans (c) - it's extremely impolite.

If you're going to take a shot at me for pointing out that I've never heard it as slang in English, then maybe you shouldn't generalize English, and point out exactly where that English is spoken. "Russki" in English , obviously, doesn't have the same effect everywhere it is spoken, and we do not need people to think that it does. And then I will not assume that all English spoken countries are the same. :)

the 'Russkies' is a well known concept from cold-war America, 'reds under the bed' etc. Note that they pronounced the 'u' vowel sound the same way as 'cut', not as 'oo' (short or long). About as ignorant as it gets, really :)

I don't know how derogative it is to refer to someone as a 'russkie' ..

So an average American doesn't really know what Russikiy means? I know this word became well-known in the US during the Cold War and now my friends here use it sometimes but they're only joking, but do they really know what the word means or do they think it just something commie and offensive? Is it considered as bad as the N word? If so, wonder what they think it means....really, it's only "Russian" :wink:

Correct. I mean, they might have some idea, since it is after all, somewhat of a close cognate... for example Negro... and it's more offensive counterpart, obviosuly has some ties to the word "black". (like for example the spanish word for black).

And you are right about the cold war terminolgy... alot of words actually sprung up and russianized the english language. One word i can think of now is "beatnik". a term for a lazy person, usually a hippy or some sort that liked to play music and look at crappy art. Thus a "beat - nik".

There are a few other words which end in "nik", but i can't think of any of the top of my head.

Also, i just remembered, (and pravit can back me up with this)... there is a game called "Operation flashpoint" witch simulates what it would have been like if american and soviet forces had ever engaged in actual combat. And when you play as an american, they always refer to them as "Russkies", ment to be offensive. Much like Kraut was, to germans, or N****r is to blacks, charlie to vietnamise, beaner to mexicans, honkey to white people, limey to brits, frogs to french... and so on.

Your american friends who say Russkie to you are probly jsut being playful, kinda like when da boiz in da hood say "sup nigga" to their fellow gangstas 8) .
