Thread: Lancastrian accent?

I guess this is more a question for our UK cousins, and I'm sure nobody cares but me, but are the Lancastrian and Yorkshire accents similar?

What accent is Jane Horrocks (Bubble) using in AbFab? Is that Lancastrian?

What does the average UK citizen associate the Lancashire or Yorkshire accents with? Is it a negative, provincial association, or something else?

They are similar in that they border each other and there tends to be a continuum of accents rather than sharp breaks at county borders, but they are distinct enough to be easily identifiable and distinguishable. That's assuming you are talking about the rural accents rather than those found in the urban areas, where the variation is higher. Remember that the English county boundaries get redrawn occassionally, so there are plenty of places that people may associate with Lancashire or Yorkshire that are no longer actually in those counties. For example, up until the 70s both Liverpool and Manchester fell inside Lancashire and you'll be familiar with how different those accents are from each other.

As for associations, that probably depends on exactly who you ask. I would imagine that people from the south east consider it to sound "northern" and working class, perhaps even a little backward, and yes certainly provincial, but then people from the SE think that about every regional accent. Ask a Scot though, or someone from the midlands, and you'll likely get a different answer.

That aside, there is also a stereotype of Yorkshiremen and Lancastrians as being boring and pedantic, but honest.

Since I've been here the Liverpool accent has been by far my favorite. People from Liverpool sound like they are singing when they talk.

I don't even know what the accent is called in east anglia. Whatever it is it sounds horrible though ;(

Being from Yorkshire Id say that not only are the Yorks and Lancastrian accents different, but they differ depending if your in the north and south, for example, of each county. However some words will sound similar from both sides of the boarder.
Yes, Jane Horrocks is from Lancaster, but her accent in Ab Fab was over emphisised for the comic value.
Daphne Moon in Frasier was a great example of a Manchester accent (though not if your from Bolton for example).
It's quite diverse.

Oh too right. The phrase 'little old boy' annoyed me. It could refer your son or your grandad!?
And 'mate'. "Alright mate." I hated being called 'mate'! Even married couples called each other mate! Urgh!
When I first moved there one stupid clot told me to "move back to america"!? I showed him how far Yorkshire was from the US. Sigh.

It's funny you mention 'Daphne' (I forget the actress's name), because I heard that she is actually from Essex, and I always wondered if her Mancunian accent sounded genuine. I'm glad to hear that it does.

I remember one episode where her family came to visit, and their accents were all over the map, the worst was the one who had this horrible Australian-inflected Cockney accent. It shows that even professional actors aren't always good with accents.

I'm kind of disappointed to hear that Jane Horrocks exaggerates her accent. Listening to Bubble talk was always one of my favorite things about that show. It's still brilliant, but... I guess my Bubble has burst

Jane Leeves was born in Ilford Essex and grew up in East Grinstead. You can also see her in Benny Hill and Monty Python. Her Mancs accent was spot on though. Agreed about Daphne's brother, Anthony LaPaglia had a terrible cockney/mancs/australian accent.
But the actor who played Frasiers dad really is from Manchester. Go figure!?
