Как обычно говорят по-английски "начальник вызывает к себе сотрудника"?
Например:

Когда мой начальник вызывает меня к себе, у меня трясутся коленки.
(начальник секретарше) Вызовите мне Иванова / Пригласите Иванова ко мне в кабинет.
Он ждет в приемной? Но я его не вызывал!

вызывает к себе is just "summon", I think.

Иногда вообще используются другие конструкции (как в случае с "by doing something" )

Например: "Секретарша начальника сказала мне, что он вызывает меня к себе в кабинет" — "The boss's secretary told he he wants to see me in his office".

Yeah, both of those are fine. As translationsnmru said though,

When my boss asks to see me, I become weak in the knees
Ask Ivanov to come to my office.
He's in the waiting room?.. But I didn't ask to see him!

Those would also work. The difference between the two is that "summon" is in principle more of an order wheras "ask to see" is in principle more of a request. The reason I say "in principle" is that there is loads of overlap between them, and depending on context or intonation and so on you could easily make "summon" into a request and vice versa.

"summon" высокопарное слово. Я, например, никогда в жизни не выговаривал это слово, хотя, конечно, хорошо его понимаю.
