Thread: translate this please

I often hear in RAP: 'Check it out, babe!' The translation of check out in my dictionary seems to me very strange. So, can anyone explain me what it means?
And, by the way, what 'big phat can of worms' means. Especially phat

Check it out is like 'Come and see this, take a look, this is worth your attention' type of thing but only used in formal conversation. It's just more of a slang term.

A 'check out' is a grocery store till area for when you want to pay for something in a shop...it must be 'check it out' to mean the thing you're asking about.

Phat is just a made-up word from the word 'fat'.

When you open a metaphorical 'can of worms' it means you're getting into a whole lot of trouble.

Phat is also used as the emphasiser in that particular sentence, it's just the 'же' of the sentence.

"Check it out" is not used in formal conversation
But I agree with the rest of Volk's post.

Phat - used to indicate something/someboy (female) is cool / attractive. When it's spoken, you have to make sure to emphasize the intonation on 'phat' or else it really won't make any sense. It's also a very urban word, so unless your from a large city people will look at you funny if you use it. Another explanation for the etymology (if you even call it that) is that its an acronym for Pretty Hot And Tempting (used when talking about females).

Do you mean any other meanings? If so, I'd give the following meaning of 'check out'.

You also 'check out' of a hotel before you leave. 'Check out' can be a verb or a noun though, either at the hotel or the grocery store. You check out (verb) before you leave but you do so at the check out (noun) which is also often called a check out counter. (counter meaning a sort of table-not something that counts) Check IT out can also be said check THIS out, check THAT out, etc. All have a very different meaning than check out.

People can also be said to "check out" of other places, similarly to hotels, often jestingly. I think "checking in" is the opposite.

I've just looked up 'check out' in my English dictionary and received the following results:

It seems like these are all meanings of the verb 'check out'. Though most of them have already been referred to here.

Call me an informal bastard, but we at work use "check it out" often enough. We are engineers, we want to show our work to other people.

"I just finished a simulation, here are the plots. Check them out, see that frequency peak at 23 Hz? Etc."
"Hey boss, check out the email I just sent you. I have important financial matters to discuss"

check out also means "to die" very colloquial.

We use "check out" when we want to get a document from the SourceSave, and "check in" - to put a doc. into the SourceSafe.
(Sourcesafe is a programm which controls an access to documents stored on a computer).

My dictionary knows nothing about check it out but what it knows about check out:
check out

This is slang. You will not find this phrase in any dictionary.

1. Rich like butter, really good, extremely well put together. "ATCQ be putting together some phat beats."

2. If a girl was phat, she had Plenty o' Hips And Thighs, in other words PHysically ATtractive; old slang. Think 60's or early 70's here. A bit more modern: Pussy, Hips And Tits or even Pretty Hot And Tempting.
